Net Zero Energy Homes

Energy Rates LLC offers advanced technical services for projects aiming for “net” zero or ultra low energy usage. This strategy focuses on reducing the shell and appliance loads to the point where the balance of the energy needed by the home can be served by renewable sources, typically onsite solar.

One advantage of this approach is the ability to downsize or eliminate the large expensive mechanical systems. The heat loads in these projects are so small a small mini split heat pump or hot water heater can typically meet the requirements. Whatever small amount of energy is required by the home can be offset by solar production.

These low energy buildings needs to meet a very stringent strategy to minimize the loads. Based on our experience we would start with the following minimum details:

  • Below grade/ foundation insulation R –20
  • Above grade walls R-40
  • Ceilings minimum R -70
  • Reasonable glazing to floor area ratios
  • Passive solar strategies and thermal mass
  • Minimum .20 U-Value glazing
  • Extremely low building shell leakage
  • Extremely low/zero duct system leakage
  • Very high efficiency/small scale mechanicals
  • High efficiency lighting and appliances
  • Solar or other renewable sources

Since every project has a unique set of variables we can work with you to develop custom insulation configurations and mechanical system suggestions. As the project unfolds we will develop an appropriate onsite inspection schedule to provide technical guidance and help ensure the project goals are met.

These strategies can also be effectively used on Deep Energy Retrofits of existing homes. This typically is initiated when the homes needs new siding, windows and roofing, but can be phased in over a period of time.

Currently there are substantial financial incentives available for qualifying Tier 3/ ultra low energy new homes as well as projects that qualify for Deep Energy Retrofit pilot programs.
