Duct Testing and Training

Home Energy Raters LLC provides duct testing services to help HVAC contractors and builders comply with the new energy codes.

The field staff at Home Energy Raters is very experienced at testing, troubleshooting, and fixing duct leakage and has provided duct training services for contractors throughout Massachusetts.

Using a dust blaster and test smoke our technicians pressurize the system to locate any remaining leaks.  The calibrated fan provides the CFM flow needed to determine if the system meets code, based on the size of the home. If for any reason the system is not in compliance we can work with your crews or subcontractor to rectify the problem areas.

  • All leakage areas in any ducts, furnace cabinets, and related components will be completely sealed airtight with duct mastic and/or butyl backed foil tape. This includes all joints and seams including Pittsburgs.
  • Tape or mastic all flex duct to take off connections
  • All duct boots will be sealed to the ceiling board, wall board, or subfloor, with mastic, tape or silicone caulk
  • Avoid using the building frame for ducting. Where panned returns must be used make sure to seal the framing and the pan to the joists.
  • All ducts, furnace cabinets, and related components will be sealed to a minimum of 6 cfm per 100  square foot of living area.
