Blower Door Testing
A Blower door is a diagnostic tool designed to measure the airtightness of buildings and to help identify air leakage locations. A blower door consists of a calibrated fan for measuring an airflow rate, and a pressure-sensing device to measure the air pressure created by the fan flow. Knowing the airtightness of buildings helps us predict energy usage and anticipate ventilation needs to ensure adequate air exchange rates.
Home Energy Raters recommends using test smoke and/or an infrared thermal imager to locate the otherwise invisible drafts and exfiltration points that can create problems in buildings. We also recommend testing and sizing of ventilation systems and bath exhaust fans to help avoid air quality complications.
